Scaffolding Accidents – Case Studies

Case study A – Worker fell from height using unsafe equipment

A worker was badly injured when he fell whilst working at height.  He sustained head injuries and broken ribs.  The Court found that the equipment supplied by the employer was unsafe.  The platform had no guardrails and was not properly installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

The law states that every employer must ensure that work at height is properly planned, supervised and carried out in a safe manner.

Case study B – Badly injured worker suffered injuries due to no harness

Another worker suffered serious head, chest and abdominal injuries whilst scaffolding he was working on was being dismantled.  Due to his injuries he was off work sick for several months.

Had guardrails been in place and had the worker been provided with a harness the accident would not have happened.   The law says that suitable training must also be provided.
