Complications of pressure ulcers

They can be very painful and if not diagnosed and treated early can deteriorate to the extent that muscle or even bone is exposed.  In the most serious cases blood poisoning or gangrene can occur.

Negligence in a care home or hospital

The condition tends to affect people who are bedridden or unable to move for long periods, such as elderly people in care homes or inpatients in hospital.

Most pressure ulcers are preventable and regularly changing a person’s position can help to prevent pressure ulcers developing.  Early treatment, involving changing dressings regularly is crucial.
