Free Employment Tribunal Claims Advice

We regret that we are unable to provide a free helpline advice service, however ACAS provides free, impartial advice and guidance and can be contacted at www.acas.org.uk or 0300 123 1100.   The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) also provides free advice.  Find your local CAB office by clicking here.

Solicitors’ costs

As a rule, legal costs in the Employment Tribunal are not recoverable from the other side, even if you win your employment law case.  Solicitors’ fees can vary enormously depending on qualifications and experience as well as the location of the Solicitors’ office (for example London rates are higher).  Costs will also be determined by the amount of time spent working on your case.   Please see our “How Much Does It Cost to Bring an Unfair Dismissal Claim” page.

Legal Expenses Insurance (LEI)

We deal with many employment tribunal cases which are funded by legal expense insurance.  This is a type of pre-existing insurance commonly found in household contents insurance policies or vehicle breakdown recovery policies and provides legal funding for bringing employment law claims in the Employment Tribunal.  The advantage of using this type of funding is that the insurers (subject to being satisfied that the employment law claim is likely to succeed) will pay your costs, including barrister’s fees, so that you will not have to pay legal fees or suffer a deduction from your compensation.

If you do not have legal expenses insurance it is often possible to offer a range or combination of funding arrangements to suit your budget, for example a payment plan, fixed fees or pay-as-you-go. 

Pay as You Go

You can spread the cost of your legal fees throughout the lifetime of your case so that you pay only for each stage as it is reached.  If you wish, we can agree a payment plan to fit in with your budget. 

Fixed fees

We can offer fixed fees to review documents and advise on the merits of your case and likely compensation.  The fee will also include taking your initial instructions.   The fees will depend on the complexity of the case but range from £1,000.00 to £1,500.00 + VAT. 

No Win, No Fee in Employment Tribunal Claims

In No Win No Fee cases if your claim does not succeed we will not charge our fee (although other costs, such as barrister’s fees may be payable). In successful cases your costs are deducted from your compensation at the end of the case.  Our fee is usually 30% of any compensation (including VAT).   We can offer no win no fee if we consider that your claim has good prospects of success after reviewing documentation and taking initial instructions (see previous paragraph).

Legal Aid

Legal Aid is no longer available for the vast majority of employment law claims.  However, subject to financial eligibility you may qualify for legal aid for discrimination claims. https://www.gov.uk/check-legal-aid.   We do not undertake legal aid work.
