Road Deaths At All Time Low
The Department of Transport's most recent figures show that the number of deaths on British roads in 2008 fell overall by 14% to a record low of 2,538. There was an 11% decrease in pedestrian deaths and a 16% decrease for motorcyclists.
However, there was a 2% increase in deaths amongst children and a 1% increase in total casualties amongst cyclists.
Altogether there were 231,000 injuries or deaths last year on Britain's roads.
The Campaign for Road Safety estimates that 1,000 deaths per year could be prevented by better signs, road layouts and lines.
Diane Massey of DSM Legal says:
"Although there was a 7% decrease on the 2007 figures for casualties we would all agree that one injury or death is too many. There is still much to do, but the Government's plan to drastically reduce casualties on our roads is very welcome.”
Children are amongst the most vulnerable road users. The Government's Think website provides free road safety information and guidance for children, parents and carers.
