Court awards £2.5m

Court awards £2.5m compensation to holiday tourists - June 2009

More than 500 holidaymakers have recently won compensation from Thomas Cook and its subsidiary My Travel after they fell ill while staying at the Bahia Principe Hotel in the Dominican Republic in 2007.

The group all fell ill with a range of illnesses, including Salmonella and E-Coli.

The holidaymakers, amongst whom there were 12 honeymooning couples, all had their holidays ruined.

The Dominican Republic Minister for Public Health confirmed that the holidaymakers had become ill due to contaminated food.

The compensation is one of the largest sums ever paid following Court action.
